“Tracing Legacies” featuring Gregory Walker & Redi Llupa
Performed by composer and violinist Gregory Walker and pianist Redi Llupa, this program explores cultural and familial legacies through sonatas for violin and piano by Johannes Brahms, George Walker, and his son Gregory Walker.
Johannes Brahms’s Sonata for Piano and Violin in G major, Op. 78 is one of the most lyrical displays of his chamber music and instrumental writing. While representing a different era and musical aesthetic, George Walker chiseled out music much like Brahms, unifying his scores through the development and manipulation of germinal motifs, and expressing only the most essential musical thoughts while discarding any superfluous elements. As a pianist, George Walker performed numerous compositions by Brahms and showed great affinity for his compositional style, which must have influenced his craftsmanship as a composer. While written in an entirely different musical idiom, Gregory Walker’s Violin and Piano Sonata contains numerous quotations from his father’s sonatas for piano and violin, creating a generational thread through their music.
